In 2018, Rapinoe was appointed cocaptain. Rapinoe scored two goals as United States beat Australia 4-3 in the bronze medal game at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Japan had been prevented from attending to the Olympics until 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
